A shining example of the ignorance of the media. Yours there are as bad as
ours here.
The Tilapia spp that are the major pests around the world are almost never
kept as aquarium fish, as was already (correctly) stated by someone on this
list. And where was the hobbyist representative in all this? No one bothered
to invite them, as usual. Just the token scientist and the token angler. My
guess is that it probably WAS some fisherman who did this -- stupid bloke
probably wanted something to catch that he could eat and didn't want to pay
the price for the stuff at his local market.
It's probably not the case in Oz, but I know the Peace Corp members are
largely to blame for the spread of Tilapia in many of the Third-World
countries where it is a major problem. Trying to give the natives food...
like they don't already have enough sources that occur naturally or how
would they have gotten to become natives in the first place? Crazy.
Sorry to hear they've got such a fin-hold there in Oz. That sucks. :-(
