Subject: DecaWin: Directory of Ecologists and Environmental Scientists of Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal
Dear Mr. Huntley,
I would like to introduce you to a new product of Fundacion Sirena: the
Directory of Ecologists and Environmental Scientists of Latin America, the
Caribbean, Spain and Portugal. It is a Data Base under Windows that carries
a wealth of information about 3,305 people active in the environmental
sciences, in research and in policy. I thought it might be of great interest
to you in relation to your activities in relation to the Aquatic
Conservation Network, or to your institution. Please do not hesitate to
request more information if needed.
Cordially,
Dr. Jorge Rabinovich
Executive Secretary
Fundacion Sirena

Fundacion Sirena is a non-profit non-governmental organization that, with
the initial support of UNESCO, the Panamerican Health Organization, the
Higher Council for Scientific Research of Spain, and the Spanish Agency for
International Cooperation, has developed DECA:
DIRECTORY OF ECOLOGISTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTISTS OF
LATIN AMERICA, THE CARIBBEAN, PORTUGAL AND SPAIN
This Data Base is now available in a Windows version, to be used under any
Windows platform (Windows 3.1, Work for Groups 3.11, or Windows 95). DECA
provides an extremely rich information on who is doing what, where and how
in the environmental sciences in Latin America, the Caribbean, Portugal and
Spain. This Data Base is a compilation of personal, institutional, academic,
methodological and technical data from 3,305 people that work in a high
variety of environmental subjects and approaches.
The profile of the people included in DECA covers a wide spectrum: any
person working with an environmental approach was eligible: professors and
researchers, administrators and professionals in any area of endeavor:
ecology proper, veterinary, health, sociology, architecture, agronomy,
education, politics, law, economy, administration, etc., with the only
condition that the activity would be clearly environmental.
People of any citizenship and living in any country in the World were also
included provided their work would be carried out in the region of Latin
America and the Caribbean, or if they worked associated with people from
this region. Latin Americans living and working in other countries outside
the Region were also included in the Directory.
COVERAGE:
The Data Base DECA includes 3,305 people from a total of over 796
institutions of 48 different countries of Latin America, the Caribbean,
Spain, Portugal, of other countries outside of the Region. You will have
access to the information on the following number of people in the eighteen
countries with the highest number of ecologists and environmental scientists:
Argentina: 688 Cuba: 125
Mexico: 505 USA: 90
Brasil: 501 Peru: 66
Espan~a: 303 Costa Rica: 46
Venezuela: 302 Uruguay: 43
Colombia: 218 Panama: 39
Chile: 156 Bolivia: 34
Another 180 people distributed among the other 34 countries carry the same
information. In DECA each person is associated with 50 fields of information
of personal, technical, and institutional nature.
A special effort was carried out in this compilation to classify the
activities of ecologists and environmental scientists by the kind of
organisms object of study, as well as by type of environment, type of
climate, methods used as well as by other criteria.
An interactive program with friendly menus will allow you to make searches by:
1. Name
2. Country
3. Terrestrial environments
4. Aquatic environments
5. Marine environments
6. Types of climates
7. Ecological level of study
8. Type of animals
9. Type of plants
10. Other organisms
11. Orientation, approach or type of responsibility
12. Area of activity
13. Working methods
14. Nature of the Institution
15. Nature of the position.
For every person in the answer to your search you will have all the
information provided by the respondents: name, institution, postal address,
telephones, telefax numbers, electronic mail addresses, birth date, up to
three different academic degrees (with the granting institution and the
year obtained), and the two projects or tasks that represent each person's
main activity.
The menus of the program that manages the Data Base DECA allow for a
friendly search of any combination of the information compiled. Each piece
of information has several alternatives. For example, if you have selected
CLIMATE, another menu will offer you a selection between: COLD, TEMPERATE,
SUBTROPICAL or TROPICAL. You can use any logical combination as you wish in
searching any characteristic you are interested in, within or between
different levels of information.
DECA allows you to obtain an answer to the following kind of questions:
Who are the people working in freshwater ecosystems in the subtropics ?
Who are studying tropical mammals from an anthropological point of view ?
Who are carrying out research in the area of energy in a private institution
using satellite images ?
What kind of institutions have more than ten people working in the area
aquiculture in the tropics?
How many people that work in international organizatipons have a Ph. D.
degree, and where are they?
After a searching session you are informed about how many people satisfy
your requirements. If you want to know the contents of the result of your
search, a second session offers you three kinds of output (each either
through the screen or through four types of printers):
1. Name, postal address, telephones, Telex, Fax and electronic mail address.
2. Name and postal address formatted as two-columns for mailing labels.
3. Name, citizenship, birth date, country, position, institution, research
projects or responsibilities, and degrees (with year and granting institution).
Equipment requirements: DECA for Windows is distributed in five 3.5" HD
diskettes and works on any IBM AT, PS/2 or full AT compatibles, 386 an
higher (however, we recommend it to be used in 486 and higher equipments).
For installation it requires 20 Mbytes of space in the hard disk. It comes
with a user's manual in English or Spanish. The program allows to switch
between English and Spanish anytime during a session, so that the menus and
the help instructions are bilingual (however, the contents of the Data Base
are only in Spanish).
