Charley Grimes has kept the same group of boesemani since he got
them. We've traded fry back and forth a few times to make sure that
each of was able to keep the stock. When you put them next to other
good stock, they are <still> a deeper orange. Same water conditions,
same feeding schedule, I have both. I've kept them going for all
these years and they are still have a deeper orange than the other
varieties. As in all bows sunshine is benefitial as well as a good
diet BUT this is not what is going on with this particular group of
fish. Indy is known for liquid rock, which NG rainbows enjoy <to a
point>. Some of the other australian rainbows don't enjoy this sort
of water in the least and prefer water with much less hardness and
tannins. They certainly show the difference, depending on their
likes and dislikes. That is one of the reasons that we have made it
a point to try to have rainbow keepers know about their water
chemistry in terms of GH, KH and pH so that they can reproduce the
successful conditions no matter what part of the country they live
in.

The one reason that we treat this fish as the "original" versus the
second group, ie "Ekkwill" is that there is already a cross that is
being produced that the wholesalers are calling the "red boesemani",
and Al like the original poster said, you don't need a PHD or a DNA
lab to realize that THIS fish is a cross. It however is not the
orange/red boesemani that Charley Grimes and I have. These are two
different issues. Somewhere I have a fairly nice picture of a mature
adult of this variety. Maybe I'll get it scanned and put it up on
the web site.
