Thought I would add my .02 worth to the Camallanus sp. debate. Camallanus is
the name of the genus. There are probably several species. According to my
sources, there usually is an intermediate host. Live foods may indeed have
something to do with this. I really don't know if an intermediate host is
required, but generally, nematodes can get by without one. They do generally
lay eggs, which must mature in the environment for a period of time. Then a
new host ingests the eggs and starts the life cycle over again. I would not
think that an adult worm could leave one fish and infect another fish
directly.
Ivermectin is a wormer used in cattle and most other species. Don't use
it in a very high dose in Collie dogs though, it will kill them slicker than
s**t. Theoretically it should work on Camallanus sp.
Piperazine is the wormer that just stuns the worms. When they wake up
they are not in the fish anymore. You are right about that one Gary.
Be carefull of the dose. As Scott and Roy-boy found out, the drug can
be quite rapidly fatal when used at too high of a dose. Bruce recommended a
dose in a previous post. Bruce- which product is Ivomec RV? and what is the
concentration of drug in it. I don't think the labeling is the same here and
it does come in different concentrations depending on the intended usage.
