While I never used Kalkwasser very often, I did have an experience when it
caused the pH to dive. I talked to the folks at Kent Marine and they told
me that the carbonate hardness was probably too low, which caused the pH to
drop. That makes sense, but they went on to stress the importance of a well
buffered system with a pH above 8, preferably 8.4 because the calcium in the
calcium hydroxide was not available at a pH lower than about 8. The pH that
I refered to when I vaguely stated "the pH at which we raise rainbows" was a
pH below 8. I should have used I instead of we.
