Thanks to Adrian and Michael Haas for your information.
I have six fish (3m/3f) in a heavily planted 60 gal with 8 M. praecox and 4 M. herbertaxelrodi. The werneri seem to be holding their own quite well, and are the liveliest fish in the tank. They do school well with the praecox.
 
I'll start breeding them (ahem, attempt to start breeding them) in a few weeks, once they have had a chance to mature - only one of the males has vertical bars so far.
