The photo I posted in this forum is of my 55 gal. It has about 14
large Bows in a heavily planted 55 gal. All the plants are in pots.
I only change about 50% of the water every 3-6 months. I've kept all
my tanks with infrequent water changes since 1987 and the fish didn't
seem to mind.
In the tank with 14 large fish/55 gal, I noticed that the fish were
breathing hard early in the morning (before photosynthesis kicks in
and adds fresh oxygen to water). So recently I started aerating the
tank at night. Air-pump is on a timer for 6 hours (midnight to 6
AM). This took care of the problem. Now that I've added night-time
aeration, I probably could (if I wanted to) add more fish to this
tank.
