a) How practical your advice "Buying fish from trusted and
experienced sources" actually is for the average comsumer buying
Rainbows at their LFS. From the rest of the article, it seems one
cannot reasonably expect your LFS to be, in this case (i.e., WRT
Mycobacteriosis pathogens), worthy of such trust. Rather or
instead, perhaps a buyer's protocol is in order for all bred fish
(or including wild-caught ones too) that may include treating them
with Maracyn Plus. So perhaps before introducing any new Rainbow
fish into your home tanks, consumers should treat them with Maracyn
Plus say for 3-to-10 days in a quarantine tank as a preventative
measure.
b) Whether any vitamin deficiencies, in addition to water conditions
(as Gary notes), can be a contributing factor (e.g., for symptom
onset). Have you found any studies or other literature that make
reference to M. marinum -related Mycobacteriousis and common
accompanying stressors?
Finally, when I said earlier...
"Honestly, I'd love to find a volume or Website on tank/fish
syndromes, diseases, and maladies as comprehensive as/not
unlike/somewhat along the lines of Diana Walstad's "Ecology of the
Planted Aquarium"(but with more photos)"
...I had no idea that I was conversing with Diana Walstad, the very
same person. Small world, eh? Thank You also for your book.
I am honored to make your acquaintance.
