I'm not sure how an overdose of dechlorination reagent (Amquel) is supposed
to kill hydra. How does that work without messing up the fish? Adrian had
a good cure for Planeria, which sounds like what you are talking about. It
was something that I couldn't find in the States though so I tossed the
note. BTW for those that are trying to kill hydra my killifish friend, Jack
Heller strongly suggested that I use Fluke-tabs from Aquarium Products, at
half strength. Bausman's and all the other stuff wasn't working at all on
hydra. I would bet that formaldehyde would work but use it very carefully.
It is stated to be a carcinogen and if spilled on your hands and not washed
off immediately can cause delayed allergic reactions. Some people just get
contact dermatitis after becoming sensitized but others react with breathing
problems. It does evaporate and does get destroyed by "mulm". Clean your
tank before treating. Also remove that carbon filter as it will also
destroy it quickly. IF you can find fluke-tabs give them a try. If they
work half as well on planeria as they do on hydra you will be rid of them
quickly. Be sure to wash all of your nets in very hot water to kill any in
there. If you have a lot of tanks you really have to get rid of it in every
tank or it will be back before you know it, like any disease.

For all you killifish fans watch for Jack Heller's article on Epipyplatys
(pardon the spelling) in the September issue of AFM. Which will arrive at
US mailboxes in a week or so :-)

cheers,

gary lange
