I really haven't seen myco go crazy on gills, sounds more like low pH and perhaps you burned the gills. They will crust over sometimes and curl outward. Did that to some diamond tetras a while back. They also might have some gill paracites. You might check that or treat for paracites. These fish do fine with medium size fish but I'm guessing if you have young bows with them that they might get nipped, especially if there is a crowding issue. I would really go back and check the water pH. If there is a problem then that might be the cause of your white gills. On your fry make sure you save the brightest for your next breeders as they don't all throw true. However with each new generation that Kent produces the fish are putting out many more full colored fish.

Gary,
I am new to this group but thought I would share some experiences
with my goo-obos and a problem. I bought a pair a while back on
Aquabid and bred them. The fry have shown a range of colors but
probably none as colorful as pictured in TFH. I have found them to
be peaceful but they have nipped the tails of young rainbows I was
raising them with. Maybe I overcrowded them and/or was not feeding
them enough?
My problem now is I seem to be getting an outbreak of some type of
disease in the fry (now ~1" long). The gills get distended by some
type of whitish growth or tumor. I am thinking it might be myco in
which case from what I have read there is no treatment/cure.
Have you seen these symptoms in goo obos? None of my other fish
(including rainbows) seem to be having this problem.
I could try to post a picture if you think that would help.
