My first thought also was the Vortex.- and the smell...hydrogen sulphide
(rotten egg gas)? This is produced from anaerobic bacteria which thrive in
conditions without oxygen. Is is possible that the Vortex was not cleaned
properly before use? I have seen this exact situation before where a
canister filter has been turned back on again after a period of not unuse,
or even after a lengthy power blackout- without being thoroughly rinsed out
first. The result is a very quick kill (over several hours) of all fish
inhabitants. Not sure why, and it may just be a coincidence, but most
situations I have seen have occurred at night also.

Regards,
Jennifer.
