I have now had a chance to look at your pix and agree with JUlie that they
are both males. I have seen large deep bodied females with excellent colour
and if seem by themselves could easily have been taken for males from a
distance but the first dorsal is the most reliable guide - in females it
rarely has any colour, is short and rounded.
Go to your source and look at the first dorsals of the others and pick one
with a short fin - if you like to photograph your fish then a reverse trio
is one of the best ways to get them to display and colour fully. One of the
foremost rainbowfish photographers in the world (Gunther Schmida) always
uses this trick.
