I would say it depends on a lot of factors, i.e. retail vs wholesale, do
you like these people, or would giving freebees promote the particular
species, etc. I try to get 40% of retail (or at least 40% of what I
retail them at). But then again I have some fish that people do not
regularly find in pet shops here in Honolulu and when you do see them they
tend to be expensive (for me anything over $5 at a pet shop is expensive,
from a breeder over $20 per fish is expensive). For example I bought my
Ps. connieae for $11-13 each, nice adult fish that didn't spawn till just
about this past spring, for me buying 4 of these babies was expensive (and
I expect most people, excluding, specialists, would not buy them because
most don't know what they were, hell I put several pairs up for auction at
out local club at $5 per pair and they didn't move, imagine $2.5 each for
fish I paid 5-6 times the price for.. However this did catch the eye of
the local middle-man/fish broker who said he would get me $3-$5 each. I
imagine he is adding about $3-5 each fish before it gets to the market and
then they get marked-up about 100%). But then again on another note, I
frequently give stuff away to people intrested in the fish (I am not in it
for the money, I just enjoy breeding and I need more space as I get more to
hatch out). I have also shipped stuff at (Ps. gertrudae at $3 each +
shipping). I see making good quality fish availible at reasonable prices
(or free) a means of getting more people intrested in the fish we breed and
the problems we deal with.
Before anyone asks, I don't have much Ps. connieae or Ps. gertrudae in
stock, all are on hold for the broker. They are the pale strain and are
really nice fish. I should have more in a few months. I do have a bunch
of Ps. furcata if anyone is intrested and willing to pay postage I am
willing to let them go for about $3 each (they are young, but sexable).
