Having just seen a giant danio linger for literally weeks, unable to
swim correctly, probably being eaten alive from the inside out by some
bacterial disease, I'd say that being treated is probably a good option
for most organisms.

They will hold onto life as long as possible. Even in situations and
circumstances that turn your stomach.

Ultimately, I decided that the kindest thing was to destroy the danio.
That is a call that everyone who is responsible for animals has to make on
their own.
