'Line "breeding from a lone individual to save an "aquarium" strain of some form or other of a particular species probably could have a place theoretically in the scheme of things but it is much better to have not outcrossed obviously.
Another problem is we are only using easily observed physical characteristics to select our breeders and these can be notoriously unreliable, especially in females. The other problem is the standard that we are breeding to - each form of any particular s
pecies usually has a wide variation in pattern and intensity, even allowing for conditions.

crossing to another tribe eg Pascoe river, was the only way to save a
particular tribe in captivity. This would be necessary when there was
only a single specimen and to breed it would need to be outcrossed. If
this were done carefully and with great attention to detail in about six
generattions (at least for plants) you would have something that was near
isogenic with the starting animal and you would have a breeding
population of something that may have otherwise been lost.>>
