There is a term that comes to mind - "waste" - it's of no use even as a tank
specimen because it can never be bred from reliably...

It's a difficult call to make, especially with tris, IMHO. There are new
varieties turning up all the time. Basically, I wouldn't buy a fish from a
shop unless I knew exactly what it was (not that I buy fish from shops very
often!) - that's why we have fish clubs.
