In my experience baby brine is too large for new rainbow fry to be able to
eat. They have to do some growing before that are large enough to eat the
brine. This can take a week or two before they are large enough depending
upon the species and the rate at which they are growing.
I use a product called "Microfood," by a company called "OSI." This is a
mirco-fine powder food that is small enough for the tiny fry to eat right
away. Unlike the liquid food that you used before, this Microfood is easier
to control the portions on, so you are less likely to foul the tank. Also,
if you feed it by sprinkling a very tiny amount onto the surface of the
water, the fry can easily eat it since they stay up near the surface, too.
The liquid food disperses all over the water column so most of it is wasted
as the fry will never even see it.
Microfood will last a long time since you only need a tiny amount for any
feeding. Therefore to keep it from going stale you need to keep it cool. I
keep mine outside of my fishroom in our cold basement. In the past I kept it
in the refridgerator. If you keep it cool so it doesn't spoil, one small
package will last you a very, very long time.
I have also used vinegar eels and while they do work well, the Microfood is
even easier to use. A combination of the two foods would be ideal I think.
