I am given pause to think again about the whole business of aquaculture...
It seems to me that relieving the pressure on the world's protein resources
by producing "factory farmed fish" (like it's predecessors the "factory
chicken" and the "factory bacon") is asking a lot of the fish... and it
isn't a "them or us" argument as some in the trade would have us believe...
to me, the slides I saw at last year's ANGFA Convention of a "shining
example of a aquaculture," with a lot of big fish in a small tank was not so
much of an achievement at all, more of a bloody shame. It was a great
technical marvel, granted, to pack so many fish into a small advanced system
with wondrous redox levels and all the rest of it, owing to modern
scientific filtration. But I do have to wonder if the people that do that
sort of thing actually give a toss about the fish at all.

All other things, to their destruction draw,
Only our love hath no decay;
This, no tomorrow hath, nor yesterday,
Running it never runs from us away,
But truly keeps this first, last, everlasting day. (John Donne)
