It depends upon how you define rainbowfishes. I think most folks define
rainbows as the family Melanotaenidae, thus blue eyes are not rainbows as
they presently reside in a seperate family (although this depends upon
who you believe--we had this discussion a month or two ago). Bedotias
had a common ancestor with Melanotaeniids a long time ago, ie 40-50
million years plus, again depending upon who you believe.

It is a well known trick that to get rainbows to show their best colour
you keep them in acid conditions, preferably caused by tanic acid, not
nitric acid. :-) However, most will only spawn in alkaline water.
