It is really enjoyable for me to see how a little "spam and jam" can be a
constructive impetus to resurgence of useful topics. Like all lists, this
one runs out of "hot" topics without new subscribers becoming involved -
not that the geriatrics know everything ( on the contrary) but often they
have simply run out of current things to get wound-up about and need a new
focus. Hence the spam to keep the list running.
If anyone is annoyed by it ( the spam that is) just ask a sensible
question. Although lurking for a variable time is common and useful to get
a "feel" for the topics and the "personalities" ( I like that euphemism)
most lists have an FAQ archive availabled somewhere in the subscribing info
posting. I recommend some familiarity with these FAQ's as they are a great
way to get a lot of very useful background info and a good way to prevent
"burnout" in regulars.
That being said I would like to extend an invitation to every subscriber to
the list to send us a "thumbnail" sketch of themselves and their interests
( hobby-wise hopefully but not necessarily) so we can extend the
friendships beyond the "inner sanctum".
