You are not wrong Richard, from memory G. maculatus spawns in the estuaries
amongst the marginal and shore grasses on king tides and the eggs stay out
of water for a fortnight and hatch when next inundated.

The story goes that they go back to the same areas all the time and those
specific conditions are hard to emulate in captivity. I fyou collect the
eggs apparently they are not hard to hatch and rear.
