Subject: FAO/WCD Dam Impacts on Fish Review
This message describes the development of a new compilation of dam-related
literature for FAO/WCD and a request for submissions by anyone who is
interested. Every attempt will be made by the proponents of the contract to
ensure that work previously done on this subject by other researchers and
compilers is recognized. The contract has a very specific purpose -- to
direct future dam-impact research, for more details please read on.....
Please note: this project is especially interested in the effects of dams
on fish, fisheries, and other aquatic organisms.
In the framework of an initiative by the Food and Agriculture Organization
of the UN (FAO) to collate information on fish, fisheries and the
environment in relation to dams, which was triggered off by a
cooperation between the World Commission on Dams and FAO, World Fisheries
Trust is currently compiling a database of dam-related literature.
The rest of this message describes the literature sources that we are
targetting and requests recommendations from this discussion group on
potential sources of information and suggested citations for inclusion in
the database. Please contact dams at worldfish.org with your submissions
before November 30, 1999. The source of all submissions that are included
in the database will be noted in the database. The searchable database will
be available to the public via the internet.
Publication types considered: published academic (peer-reviewed) materials,
government reports, journal articles, newspaper and magazine articles, NGO
reports and surveys, unpublished (grey) literature authored by government,
industry, NGOs, academics, internet and e-mail communications.
All literature collected will be coded according to the following general
subject list (these are the major subject headings -- each category will
consist of 3 to 8 sub-headings):
Dams Review Subject Code Index
A. Multisector integrated area management and planning procedures
(implemented before dam approval and/or construction)
B. Reservoir Management Options (implemented after dam approval and/or
construction)
C. Observed or anticipated impacts on the surrounding ecosystem (aquatic
environment and adjacent terrestrial zone) upstream and/or downstream
D. Observed or anticipated negative impacts on existing fisheries -
upstream and/or downstream
E. Observed or anticipated benefits to fishery sector
F. Consideration of alternatives prior to dam construction or modification
and their effects on aquatic organisms, fisheries, and the environment
G. Comparative cost/benefit analysis of development scenarios
H. Technology and methodology to reduce impacts on the aquatic ecosystem
and fisheries
I. Social impacts and mitigation
J. Dam Removal
Please forward your submissions and/or questions regarding this project to
dams at worldfish.org.
Thank you,
Sarah Riecken
