Ameca splendens has some sort of status in Mexico, but it is bred and
commonly available from livebearer hobbyists. Check with the ALA,
http://petsforum.com/ala/ for sources. I have kept this fish myself.
It's easy but aggressive.

As far as I know Gambusia affinis has no special status. It is commonly
stocked for mosquito control and is abundant in wild and introduced
populations in the US. Others could give you more detailed info on that
species. Peter, you listening?
