I think one of the few things concerned aquarists could do about such things
would be to buy and breed only natural forms of fish, and in aquarium clubs
and other associations explain that one should shun albinoes, veilfin
danios, improved Apistogrammas, parrot cichlids and other horrors. If the
present trend goes on, very soon it will be impossible to find a natural
fish in an aquarium shop.People who think they are environmentally correct
in not buying wild fish are mistaken, because once these wild fish are no
more on the market, who will remember them and who will care about
protecting their often fragile habitats ? Perhaps a bit out of the present
subject, but it is all the same thing, modern man has no respect for his
million year old biological heritage and out of greed thinks he can do
better than Nature.
Also, here in Europe, there is some popular resistance to genetically
modified food plants and to growth hormone contaminated meat. Concerned
Americans, please help us, in the WTO, we are often in trouble with your
Government about such things !

No doubt having these fish get loose in North America would be bad nows.
However, my nightmare is seeing this creature added to the portmanteau biota
of aquaculture species that have already eliminated every native fish from
the central highlands of Madagascar and doing their level best to complete
the job in the coastal lowlands! Under the circumstances, there is a LOT to
be said for a pre-emptive strike. I wonder how many gallons of rotenone
would be required to do a proper job of proactive management?
