Aquatic Biology, Aquaculture & Fisheries Resources
OVER 655,000 RECORDS!
Aquatic Biology, Aquaculture & Fisheries Resources (ABAFR) is an
exclusive combination of the world's premier databases. ABAFR combines
all relevant portions of Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA)
with FISHLIT, CAB Index and AGRIS Aquaculture subsets, Fisheries
Review, Fish & Wildlife Reference Service, and much more. These major
collections provide unparalleled access to information on the science
and management of aquatic organisms and environments. =A0
Featuring the ASFA Thesaurus
ABAFR provides automated searching with the Aquatic Sciences &
Fisheries Abstracts thesaurus (10,000 terms). In addition, all taxa
have been expanded -from genus to subkingdom- using the National
Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) and FISHLIT taxonomic codes.
Addresses are included for over 50,000 publishing scientists! Other
resources provided uniquely on this NISC DISC include the ASFA
Monitoring List -publications indexed in ASFA- and the ASFA Geographic
Authority List. These tools, plus the great databases listed below,
make ABAFR the ultimate value for scientists, researchers, and other
professionals.
Databases Included:
Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (Part 1, 1978-present) -
Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Sponsored by four United Nations
agencies and produced in partnership with research centers worldwide,
and cited by most marine science librarians as their primary database,
ASFA provides unparalleled coverage of all aspects of estuarine,
brackishwater, and freshwater organisms and their environments;
aquaculture and fisheries; as well as the unique contamination
problems of aquatic environments. Over 406,000 records in all.
FISHLIT (1985-present) - NISC SA, in association with the J.L.B. Smith
Institute of Ichthyology, & Rhodes University, South Africa. With
comprehensive coverage of tropical areas and African freshwater fish
in particular, FISHLIT provides essential information for developing
countries. Citations drawn from over 1,000 journals are fully indexed.
Some coverage dates to the 1800s. Over 60,000 records in all.
AGRIS Aquaculture Subset (1975-present) offers an international
perspective on aquaculture. Sponsored by the Food & Agricultural
Organization of the United Nations, the literature indexed in the
subset includes many unique materials, such as technical reports and
gray literature collected from all the countries participating in the
UN program. In addition to English, many records have Spanish and
French keywords as well. Over 140,000 records in all.
CAB Aquaculture Subset (1984-present) - CAB INTERNATIONAL. Over 38,000
records on fish, shellfish and aquaculture selected from the CAB
ABSTRACTS database. Aspects covered include fish and shellfish
diseases, parasitology of fish and shellfish, production (nutrition,
breeding and genetics) of aquaculture species, and nutritional aspects
of fish in the human diet. Most records include abstracts many of
which are edited and written by CABI scientists.
Fisheries Review (1971-present) - NISC SA now produces Fisheries
Review, in conjunction with FISHLIT. Fisheries Review was produced by
the U.S. National Biological Service through 1995 . Excellent coverage
of fin fish and all aspects of fisheries. Thorough taxonomic and
geographic identifiers are especially helpful. From 1996 on, Fisheries
Review will emphasize North American resources. Over 109,000 records
in all.
Fish Database (1960-present) - Fish and Wildlife Reference Service.
Ninety percent of this file is drawn from unpublished research reports
and surveys from U.S. state agencies. Content emphasizes fish
management, streams, wetlands, and endangered species. Over 7,700
records in all.
AQUACULTURE (1970-84) - National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration.
A wealth of valuable abstracts on all aspects of marine, freshwater,
and brackishwater organisms. 10,305 records.
Fish Health News (1978-85) - U.S. National Fisheries Research Center.
Detailed abstracts covering a wide variety of fish diseases and
infections. Fish-health references since 1985 are in Fisheries
Review.4,149 records.
Castell's Nutrition References (1970-present) - John Castell,
Fisheries and Oceans, Canada. Castell's respected resource covers five
major areas: Fish Nutrition References, Crustacean Nutrition
References, Mollusc Nutrition References, and Fish Culture (not
nutrition), as well as Fish Oil in Human Health. Over 8,800 records in
all.
Composite records
Duplication among files is resolved by special, software-created
composite records that contain the information shared by two or more
source records, plus any data that is unique to a record. Composite
records provide all the relevant information, but without the
inconvenience of duplicate citations.

Marine, Oceanographic & Freshwater Resources
OVER 875,000 RECORDS!
Marine, Oceanographic & Freshwater Resources (MOFR) is an exclusive
combination of the world's premier bibliographic databases on marine,
oceanographic, and related freshwater resources. Providing
comprehensive coverage of over 875,000 records on international marine
and oceanic information, as well as substantial coverage of estuarine,
brackishwater, and freshwater environments, MOFR is the world's major
oceanic resource, indispensable for any professional in the marine
sciences.
ASFA Thesaurus - MOFR provides automated searching with the Aquatic
Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) Thesaurus (10,000 terms). Other
resources provided on MOFR include the ASFA Monitoring List
-publications indexed in ASFA- and the ASFA Geographic Authority List.
These three tools alone distinguish MOFR as the ocean resource with
unprecedented practical value.
Databases on Marine Oceanographic & Freshwater Resources:
Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts (Parts 2 & 3,
1978-present)/Oceanic Abstracts (1964-present) All relevant records
from ASFA are included. ASFA, from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, is
sponsored by four U.N. agencies and produced in partnership with
research centers worldwide; it is cited by most marine science
librarians as their primary database. Database(s) include over 259,000
records.
Institute of Oceanographic Sciences Deacon Laboratory/Proudman
Oceanographic Laboratory (1985-1996). 145,000+ records. IOSDL houses
the U.K. National Oceanographic Library with a database of
multidisciplinary coverage including marine physics, chemistry,
biology, technology, geology and geophysics, pollution, meteorology,
remote sensing, etc. POL specializes in tide and sea level research
**Note: Beginning in 1997, the Southampton Oceanography Centre
(formerly IOSDL) and the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory compile
their own separate databases, OCEANIS and BIDLIB respectively. Please
see below for details.
OCEANIS (OCEAN Information System) Southampton Oceanography Centre
(1985-present). OCEANIS covers all aspects of marine science
disciplines in books, book chapters, journal articles, conference

Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory and specializes in the physical
oceanography of coasts, estuaries, and shelf/slope regions, tides,
tidal instrumentation, sea level, numeric modeling, oil spill
modeling, remote sensing, sediments and gravity. Books, journals,
conference proceedings, conference papers, reports, maps, and charts
