Sounds to me like you are being a little too overly cautious. I would
feed them a bunch of vinegar eels before you leave and forget about
them. One or two days will not be too big a drama IMO. Vinegar eels are
simple to harvest. Just invest in a plastic/nylon coffee filter and hang
this in your culture. Lift it out and let it drain then just swash it
around in a cup of water and you have all the eels you could ever want.
I would get you wife to just put in a very small amount of dry food on days
two and three. The eels will live for a long time in aquarium water
too. Just for info, at ~26oC most newly hatched rainbow fry will die
after 3 days from hatching without any food.
