I agree that hybrids will be with us if dealers have a market for
them. I feel what we need to encourage is non-acceptance of hybrids by
serious aquarists. As most serious aquarists already are against
hybridization education as to what is a pure rainbow is essential. I
also believe most dealers have found that fish sell better with trade
names. ie Blood Red Neon Vieltailed Parrot Rainbowfish. It's only
taken the mixing of 6 rainbows and a cichlid to get that one :~)
What I think may constitute consumer fraud, in this country at least,
is giving these crosses species names. If the M. marci ever shows up
as such in my state, I plan to find out and press the issue. As we do
have a rather aggressive attorney general on such issues. If you also
have such laws in your respective countries and a method of
enforcement, I would encourage others to do the same. This would end
this practice of giving Genus and Species names to crosses. If they
loose their market, they'll think twice about giving species names to
crosses.
