gary,

are you saying that the M. boesemmanni that we see in stores are hybrid if
their bodies' anterior half are not DARK, dark blue? the 4 i have are blue
but not really dark blue. the difference between them and the ones rosario
gave me years ago (which are long deceased) was that his fish were much more
brightly colored, which i attributed to his feeding them live foods, which i
don't.

also, i had seen some mystery M. in stores that have dark blue upper half and
light, silvery bottom halves (not lacustris). couldn't figure out what they
were until i saw them in a store labeled "trifasciata." then i looked for the
gold stripes and noticed that they had them but were so thin you didn't see
them unless you were looking for them. i had never seen live tris before so i
am not sure if these are hybrid or just variants (due to cultural reasons or
subspecies etc.). in these fish, more prominent than the gold stripes were
some dark blue lines.

recently i have also seen some maccullochi which are chocolate-brown striped
with some yellow in the bellies. i was told they were imported from indonesia
and that they differed from teh australian ones.

can you comment on the above?

and no, i'm not the only one without a car in nyc. it's very common around
here.
