Try using write that comes with windows 3.1, it will open almost any
format at least so it is readable. You may get several pages of garbage
before you see any real text but it very rarely is unsuccessful in my
experience.

I think word is pretty standard, and most wordprocessors can convert most
formats. Ascii is fine unless the document contains any formatting.
Unless documents are quite large I would skip any compression.
