Are we getting anywhere?

I'm sure the "Budgie" told me that of the 5 original Herbies brought in
(all caught at the same time in the same lake by the same person) 3 had red
tails and 2 had yellow tails and they all produced some fry of both tail
colour.

<<I don't know if this will help clear things up or not. Could they become
any
muddier?;-) So here goes: To quote from the Field Guide To The Freshwater
Fishes
Of New Guinea by G.R. ALLEN, page 89, under the description of Lake Terbera

Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi)...."; colour largely yellow
(sometimes greenish on back) with bluish-black midlateral stripe: dorsal,
anal,
and caudal fins yellow to red."

Based on this description I would say that Herbies can have red fins or
not! >>
