I really like a lively debate with helpful contributions from all and
sundry, and the quality of the Melanotaenia herbertaxelrod stocks around
the world was the starting focus of this list (those Red-tailed fish) if I
remember correctly. It also pointed out to me that there is still too much
concentration on colour pattern in our efforts.

We sent a lot of Emails but the ultimate limiting factor is still an
acceptable and agreed-on standard. Unfortunately most of us suffer from the
problem that we start with limited knowledge of the natural variation
within each population and our purchase ( or capture) of a very limited
number of specimens of a particular phenotype is our starting point.

These initial fish hopefully look "just like the pictures in the
book/poster/journal" so they are bred from continuously and the fry sold at
a 1 -2 inch size to all and sundry. For whatever reason the parent fish die
so some of the fry are kept and raised as replacements and surprise,
surprise when they grow up they look different to their parents. Then what
do we do?

I will be interested to hear from listmembers as to what they do at this
stage.

Good going Robert :-) embarrass the h*ll out of the RML dude. We've been
contending that ACT didn't know the dif between a tri and a herbert for
months
{see past text :-) } I'll bet you're one of those propeller heads (Sci.
dude)
that likes to pick on computer nerds :-)

Seriously, you can find a photo to compare it to at http://home.earthlink.net/~sbuckel/herbertaxelrodi.JPEG

Although the JPEG conversion lost some of the detail you can easily see that it's a very different fish. I don't recall offhand but Adrian might also have a photo of a real M. herbertaxelrodi on his homepage too.

This is exactly the reason why we really have to work at keeping the species named correctly. Here we've been shown a perfect example where there's a mixup between an Oz fish and a NG fish that both happen to be yellow. How can we hope to keep the stream strains separate?
