To Adrians suggestion of dark gravel and background I would add perimeter
planting, plenty of swimming space for schooling, a current along the front
glass to get them swimming in the main viewing area, and keep the light at
the front and directed slightly to the rear.

John, use a dark coloured gravel and dark background if you want to
highlight the rainbowfishes colour and you might want to throw in a couple
of beer & coke cans and the occasional car tyre if you want it to look
natural ;-)>>
