For my bet I'd try "goodoo" as Murray Cod are commonly known or else "yellowbelly" aka "callop" (Golden Perch) both of which are raised in large numbers in hatcheries and appear frequently enough in shops in Australia to make me suspect they will end up o

G'day Dweebs

Well, I am finally back in Oz. After being abused in the US the last few
years for my Australian accent I come home and get abused for my so
called "American" accent! Just can't win sometimes! I almost bought
Rooster the perfect gift in Auckland, they had these life size sheep for
sale, it would have been just perfect for him, although he would have
complained that it wasn't as good as the real thing. I'd forgotten just
how cold Melbourne is.... it has only been 100-104oF in Phoenix
(38-40oC) the last two weeks, it's not even up in the 60's here. I see
Darwin and Brisy are warmer so I'll only be freezing for a couple a
weeks.

Anyway, a friend posted the following message to me taht may be of
interest to some people, I'm not sure which species it is.

What is the genus of that perch that's everywhere in Australia? There were
some fat, largish perch at "That Fish Place" this weekend advertised
as 'australian fish', naturally I don't remember what *they* thought they
were, the species was something like 'specaroo' or some such.

i'd hoped for that trout carp beast, but no such luck. That might've been
worth the outrageous price they were asking (like $50 after the half-price
sale for a grayish fat thing that look a lot like a U.S. sunfish.)
