You may be surprised by the number of them that may still be alive in there.
Even in tanks where I didn't think there were any left, I've found that when
I striped the tanks down to clean out that there were actually quite a few
hideing in the gravel. I would suggest manually removing as much as possible
though. I think they are much better as a preventative measure.
I am on the other hand conducting the ultimate experment with gammarus
ability to test their ability to control hair algae. One of my sons 10
gallon tanks is about 3/4 full of the stuff. (He doesn't clean the tanks as
much as I nag him to<g>) At any rate I droped some gammarus in it and we'll
see if they are up to the task.<g>
