gl Alan they will succumb to ulcers only if you allow :-) it. What is the
hardness that you are keeping these under? I would bet that it's under 120 ppm.
What is the normal temperature? I try to keep mine in a lower tank under 82
degrees F (27.5 C?). I also try to raise the hardness on these to 180 ppm (10
degrees hardness) using shell grit or coral in the filter. My water is already
at ~150 so it's not too hard for me to do this. You might have to add something
like epsom salts or maybe one of the products that are on the market to raise
the hardness. On the point of the causitive agent for ulcers - Dr. Goldstein
did a check for one of our members a while ago on a fish that supposedly had the
classical symptoms (as described very aptly by Adrian) and it was shown to be
Mycobacterium. I feel that getting "untainted" fish really isn't as easy as
just obtaining good stock. I think that the Mycobacterium is everywhere with
most fish just like ich. It's just when you provide the correct conditions that
the rainbows come down with the disease. BTW my first Herbie, which must have
been at least 8 months when I got him lasted from September 1983 until the fall
of 1992. He was busy chasing females up to about a month before he died.
Change your water conditions and you can give el presidente :-) some trouble for
his predictions.

...On the other hand we have been having a terrible time with M. sexlineata.
The group that we are still struggling with are F3 (from the group) sent over by
Andy with Rob Rusher several years ago. Do these breed like flies down in your
RO like water? Are they also succumbing to ulcers? Try as I might I only
manage to get 8 or 9 fish out of each generation. What's your secret?

I bought a bag of them at the auction last October and have a few fry that
outlived the female. They are from Rene Jez's stock and I have been reliably
informed by none other than (El Presidente) Mr Wattam himself that they too
will succumb to ulcers....
