I just leave some tubs in full sunlight and the water will go green within a
short period of time. I find it useful to include some snails to eat any
crud from the bottom of the tub. Some people like to seed the water with
lettuce, banana skins or manure to develop stronger cultures.

I personally don't do this as I put my spawning mops in the green water and
let the fry hatch out in the tub. That way they have plenty of food from day
1.
