Next time you get a small group of 1.25 inch lacustris (they need to
be of "flashing size") try this. Net them out one at a time and
place them in another container. The males flashed like angry little
bees, just a bit right after being netted and placed in the second
container. Charley Grimes was hitting me up for some of the little
buggers and we were having a heck of a time sexing them until we
noticed the "males" flashing. We took out six flashers and 6
non-flashers. Months later he called to say that he indeed got 6
pairs out of it. This has never worked with any other bow though and
I haven't had another group of small lacustris to try it on again.
Then again most others are sexable by that size except lacustris.

In most species it is rather easy in nearly adult fish as they tend
to
have longer dorsals and anal fin in the males. However, some
species have just larger fins in the males (like Melanotaenia
irianjaya), others have only slightly larger fins in males (like
M. lacustris). Therefore it is necessary to have both sexes to
find the differences in these species.
It is quite more difficult if the species aren't adults. But if
you compare them with each other (of course you need to have
or see a couple of them therefore) you may also find the fin
differences.
