I guess Jim it really depends on what the Professor is trying to accomplish.
If he is trying to impress a group of students in a class with a quick hatch,
like by the end of a lecture, Notho guntheri or Cynolebias whitei (sorry about
the spelling) are two of the best. There are other Nothos that will work too
but that one matures very quickly so it can be hatched in something like 60
days. If you are looking for a larger egg that can be examined easier under a
microscope or disecting scope something like an Austrofundulus would be a
better choice. I remember Karen Randall telling me about a wonderful
experiment she did for her gradeschool fishy classroom. They hatched albino
Cynolebias whitei and watched them under a video microscope. As she related,
their pink bodies were essentially transparent and the magnification was high
enough to see their hearts beatind and blood streaming around their tiny
bodies. It's one of those things that sounded like a great idea to try with
younger kids but it would also be a big hit in the lab too. I would go to the
AKA site and see if you can't dig up a source. Joining would even make it
easier to obtain fish I'd bet.
