Hi
I can't answer that question exactly but I did section ovaries of P.
signifer throughout a 12 month period and in winter the gonad shrinks and
there are only a few very small eggs if any but from I think September on
the gonad starts to develop all sizes of eggs and I would say that as soon
as the fish spawns the largest ones, the next size down has grown to replace
them and this occurs pretty continuously as long as conditions are
satisfactory. An example of a case where conditions were unsatisfactory is
keeping P. signifer in with Gambusia holbrooki during the main breeding
period. The gonad of the female P. signifer did not grow.
