I wouldn't want to keep them this warm all the time, but in the moving
around of my tanks I put the planted tank with my adult tris and wanams in a
window. I have a curtain for it, but thought I would try to see how the
plants and fish would fare without the shading first. This window is West
facing so get's pretty good sun. Well then we had some cool weather for a
couple weeks and everything was fine, however Wednesday it got real warm
again and when I checked the temp in the tank it was slightly over the 90
degree mark. Of course decided to put the curtain back up then, and turned
the fan on to cool the tank. It stayed down to 84 this afternoon, but there
was no trouble with the fish even being at the 90 mark.
I truly doubt in an open tank in the shade that the temp would get anywhere
near that warm if your only getting up to the low 90's. This year has been
pretty cool so far, only finally getting up around the 110 mark. Mine aren't
outside, but in a shed like addition to the house which is my fish room,
other than a regular fan I don't cool the room. The fan across the open
tanks provides evaporative cooling, but I'm sure a breeze would do the same
thing and with the lower temps I don't see that would be a problem. Julie
keeps a bunch of fish outside all year, and I've been setting up to so I
think you shouldn't have a problem with it.
I'm still hoping to experiment with throwing some mops out in some kiddie
pools this summer and seeing if I can get some fast fry growth.
