Pseudomugil signifer is the only species mentioned that is in anyway local
to Canberra, occuring down the coast here (Batemans Bay region - I'm not
sure how much further south they go). I'm not sure I'd keep them in an
outside pond through a Canberra winter - we can guarentee sub-zero (Celsius)
temperatures at night for a couple of months a year. The M. fluviatilis from
the Murray are a bit scarce, although FWIU some of the SANFA guys have bred
quite a few.
I'd be interested if someone has suggestions about what natives could be
kept in an outside pond here all year round - the only thing that I can
think of are Galaxids - and I heard a funny story the other day about a
Galaxid found frozen half out of a pond during an especially bad winter, so
I'm none to sure about them either!
Regards, Andrew
