Hi Roy
Do you have of the R. ornatus left? I've got 2 of the F1 females left
but nothing to even attempt spawning them with. Just as they were
getting to size the male decided to take a leap. No, he didn't hit the
floor but he did hit the tank lid hard enough to do himself in. If
you've got a male left, maybe we could get these fish together for
another go at it before none are left in the US again.
My main problem when they were spawning was getting fertile eggs. I
kept the fish in about 50 ppm hardness and pH 7.0. I could usually
tell when the eggs would be fertile by the color. Clear uncolored eggs
were always infertile. If the eggs had a yellow tint they would
normally be fertile. Unfortunately the only good batch of fertile eggs
I got was just before I went out of town for a week. I was left with
only three small fry when I lost the adult female. They were just
beginning to throw eggs (none fertile) when the male did himself in.
