What do you mean by calcium is the most sig. of the buffering systems?
When you talk about buffers you need to be clear what you are trying to
buffer. Calcium is not an ion that will effect pH, on the other hand,
carbonates, and bicarbonates will. Or are you just saying using a
calcium carbonate type buffer to achieve both buffering of pH and Ca?

With the phosphates you start getting into algae problems (at least some
consider it a problem). I'll see if I can find something out regarding this.
