On Sunday Along with being ANAL retentive Peter UNmack wrote on the subject of
my mineral blocks:

Certainly, I don't think there is any danger in adding it either. I just feel
that if we can figure out the requirements of the fry better we will likewise do
better in raising
them rather than just plodding along in the dark.

I Dont believe this is plodding along in the dark. This is in a simple form an
experiment. Most aquarists dont have the ability to do assays on water (to the
fullest extent ) and must do what they can with what they have available as did
early science.
as far as the species concrned with the abnormalities one was C Axelrodi which I
do know does like the water a little harder. The other was M. spl. from Wallaby
cr. which from Dawsons Article prefers the water moderate as far as hardness but
with a ph of 7.6 I believe this to be under 100 ppm. This was the hardness in my
tank that resulted in the deformaties also the ph was the same as well. So go
figgure. That is what lead me to think there were other factors other than
calcium that affects the proper development of the fish.

One of the things that has always bothered me a little bit is we
tend to (from what I have seen) mostly raise bows on a carnivorous diet
(vinegar eels, brine shrimp etc) with very little plant material. The
Americans mostly use APR which may help the situation a bit. What do
people suggest as possible "green" fry foods? Obviously there is green
water, I've often wondered about crushing up some wollfia or the like
too

A simple response to that one is to go to your local health food store and
purchase powdered spirolena alge. I have used this before with success but I
dont any longer. Why? I dont know really, the APR works extremely well so I
guess I didnt realy have a need for it. It did however allow me to raise I.
Werneri with great success whereas the APR didnt work that well. I fed the
spirolena the same way as the APR.

Any further questions Mr. UNmack???
