P. tenellus has been a very hardy and adaptable species for me once they have
been successfully been transported home and settled in (very much like P.
mellis) even though in all of the places I have caught them the water was very
soft and acid.

I had kept a P. tenellus group going for some eight years in my moderately hard
water, 150 ppm GH, 3 degrees KH carbonate hardness. Adding a little Tetra
blackwater tonic really colored them up. BTW they were a group of fish that
originally came from Ivantsoff via Al Castro, I believe when he was at the
Steinhardt aquarium. (collected, Magela creek drainage 12 degrees 40" south,
132 degrees 55" east was the information conveyed to me by Al). They weren't
real prolific under these conditions until they were fed large amounts of
daphnia and then they produced a lot of eggs. Unfortunately that tank crashed
and the other people that I sent this fish to over the years lost interest in
them. Another good reason to keep information logs on who is currently keeping
what fish.
