And of course after sending off that last long missive I thought of what
else I was going to say. I don't understand about this natural waters
being so clean and pure. Maybe I just grew up in the wrong places in
Washington and Montana, but I spent my whole life trying to jump into
any natural, and some not so natural bodies of water. And they aren't
pristine or clean, your foot comes out of the muck and waves of nasty
stinky black goo come out, whether you're in a mountain creek or a creek
fed lake. Every water I've been in here in Arizona has been like that
too. And as to the constant water changes in natural water, well yes but
not necessarily all that much. My favorite lake is very full of plants,
it's actually 2 lakes and reasonably large. And the whole thing is fed
by this tiny little creek. It's not getting that big of a constant water
changes comparatively by volume, and by mid summer the water is pretty
nasty looking. I'm sure that some water is probably a lot nicer than
others but I also think that they aren't all so pristine and clean.

And I also think there often seems to be a theme that there is one best
way to have an aquarium usually that of the person speaking about their
way. But I don't think that's true. I think that different people have
different goals in keeping their tanks and one size fits all isn't
right. I think people should feel comfortable with different methods as
long as they are reasonably researched. I wouldn't try keeping Discus in
a 10g non-filtered tank with monthly water changes, however I do very
well with many types of livebearers that way. I don't think different
necessarily means bad as long as you aren't going to extremes and making
your fish suffer.
