Activated carbon comes in various grades, which is actually a little
deceiving when you take the various brands available to hobbyists into
consideration (most of the "grades" do not really exist in the industrial
community). The highest grades of carbon remove chlorine, chloramines,
dissolved organic material, and some of the minor and trace elements that
are in the dissolved state (not gaseous or solid); it will not remove the
majority of these elements, however. For that, you would need reverse
osmosis and/or deionization purification.

Basic purification of tap water can be performed by filling a 5-gallon
bucket with activated carbon (which can be purchased by the sack from many
manufacturers) and passing tapwater slowly through it, preferably from the
bottom to the top. This can be accomplished by installing a 1"-ID Sch. 40
PVC pipe in the center of the bucket (use a bulkhead of the appropriate
size, available through aquarium retailers and boating supply stores; make
the pipe about 1" shorter than the overall height of the bucket) and piping
tap water to flow slowly into the vessel. As the water passes through and
around the carbon, it is stripped of chlorine and chloramines, prepared for
basic use. Note that activated carbon does not remove ammonia, however, as
it is a dissolved gas.

yeah, I think carbon (if you have enough of it) takes out almost
everything except germs//parasites and maybe heavy metals.
