I suspect that the spectrum of gudgeons that look similar to yours will need
to be carefully assessed in the future when someone has the interest and
time now that we have a few more technological "tools" available to us.
Perhaps Peter Unmack might do us a little table of differences like he did
for the "Carp Gudgeon" group sometime.

I have seen a collection of slides from Neil Armstrong that features Purple
Spotted Gudgeons from several places in Australia and they are very
different fish morphologically as well as in colour pattern. From memory
your fish sounds like the picture I have in my mind of the form from the
Barcoo River.
