I had some when I lived in Arizona, and it did well outside... until
winter, that is. I am not sure if it was temps (certainly cooler, but I
was using heaters to keep water temps in the low 70s F), or a shortening
of the photoperiod duration, but it crashed completely.
If you do attempt to keep it outside, or with natural lighting inside, be
sure to keep it warm (er??) and add supplemental lighting so as to keep a
more consistent photo period.
Rhonda is right: it definitely does not appreciate covered tanks. The
stuff I kept trying to introduce to my indoor tanks never took. The tank
it did best in was open.
