If you get a chance to see ANGFA's Journal "Fishes of Sahul" , the first
issue of 1997 there is a good article by Gunther Schmida and superb colour
photos where he discusses this feature.
In some species the "stripe" colour blends in with the body colour e.g. M .
mccullochi but in others it is a major contrast e.g. the blazing red stripe
in Rhadinocentrus ornatus, against a background of dark blue and black.
Don't worry, your fish is just appreciating the way you are looking after
him.
